SS-31 (Elamipretide)

Mitochondria-targeted tetrapeptide | 50 mg

What Is This?

SS-31 (Elamipretide) is a small peptide designed to go straight to the inner membrane of mitochondria. It sticks to cardiolipin, a special fat in that membrane. When mitochondria are damaged, they leak harmful molecules and make less energy - SS-31 is studied for stabilizing that membrane and reducing the damage.

What Do Researchers Study?

Labs measure whether SS-31 lowers mitochondrial ROS (harmful oxygen byproducts), preserves ATP output, and protects cardiomyocytes, myotubes, kidney tubule cells, and neurons under low-oxygen or oxidative stress in culture. Seahorse metabolic assays and ROS dyes are common readouts.

What the Science Is Looking At

How It Works - In Plain English

Membrane Stabilizer

Binds cardiolipin and helps keep the folded cristae structures of the inner mitochondrial membrane intact. Disrupted cardiolipin is a hallmark of failing mitochondria in culture.

Energy Protection

Improves electron transport chain organization so cells maintain ATP output even under oxidative or low-oxygen stress. Seahorse XF assays are often used to confirm this.

Lower ROS

Decreases leak of harmful reactive oxygen species from damaged mitochondria - measurable with MitoSOX and similar dyes.

Cell-Type Flexibility

Because mitochondria work similarly across cell types, SS-31 is tested in cardiac, neuronal, renal, and muscle cultures to compare protective effects on energy metabolism.
